About this worksheet

Some nouns do not make the plural by adding s or es. One child becomes two children, one foot becomes two feet and one mouse becomes two mice. These are called irregular plurals, and second graders learn them one at a time, mostly by hearing and using them. A few, such as sheep and deer, do not change at all, and others change an f to ves, like leaf and leaves.

This worksheet gives ten sentences with a blank and the singular word in brackets, and the child writes the plural that fits. Ask your child to say the sentence aloud with their answer to hear whether it sounds right. A plural that ends with an s added to a changed word, such as mouses or foots, is the most common slip.

What your child will learn

  • Write the plural of irregular nouns
  • Know that some nouns change inside the word
  • Know that a few nouns stay the same

Common Core standard: L.2.1.B

Worked example

One tooth, two teeth. 'She lost two teeth this year.' The word changes inside, so no s is added.

Common mistake

Adding s to the singular (mouses, foots, childs) instead of using the special plural.

Helpful hint

Say the sentence aloud with your answer. Does it sound right?
