About this worksheet

A plural noun names more than one person, place or thing. Most nouns just add -s: one cat, two cats. But nouns that end in s, x, ch or sh are hard to say with a plain -s, so they add -es instead: one box, two boxes; one dish, two dishes. Children usually pick this up by ear, and this sheet helps them see it in the spelling. Each line shows one thing, and your child writes the word for two of them on the line.

Because the sheet mixes both endings, your child has to decide each time. A good habit is to say the plural out loud first. If it sounds like an extra beat is needed (box-es, bus-es), the word takes -es. Check a few answers together and ask your child to explain which ending they chose and why.

What your child will learn

  • Write the plural of a noun that takes -s
  • Write the plural of a noun that takes -es
  • Choose -s or -es by listening to the end of the word
  • Spell regular plurals correctly

Common Core standard: L.2.1.B

Worked example

One fox, two foxes. Fox ends in x, so it adds -es. One cat, two cats. Cat just adds -s.

Common mistake

Adding only -s to a word that ends in s, x, ch or sh, writing boxs or dishs.

Helpful hint

Say the plural out loud. If you hear an extra beat, add -es.
