About this worksheet

A compound sentence joins two short sentences into one, with a comma and a joining word. The joining word tells how the two parts are related. And adds one more thing: Mom cooked dinner, and Dad washed the dishes. But shows a difference: I wanted to play outside, but it was raining. Or gives a choice: We can walk to the park, or we can ride our bikes. And so shows a result: It was raining, so we stayed inside.

This worksheet gives ten compound sentences with the joining word missing, and the child circles the one that fits the meaning. Ask your child to read both parts and ask: does the second part add, show a difference, give a choice, or tell what happened because of the first? That question points to the right word.

What your child will learn

  • Join two sentences with and, but, or and so
  • Choose the joining word that fits the meaning
  • Know that a comma goes before the joining word

Common Core standard: L.2.1.F
