An abbreviation is a short way to write a word. Writers use abbreviations for days of the week, months, titles before names, parts of an address and units of measure, and most of them end with a period. A third grader learns the common ones so they can read an address, a calendar or a recipe and write them correctly. On this worksheet your child sees a word and writes its abbreviation on the line.
Building Confidence uses days of the week and everyday titles such as Mr. and Dr. , On Level adds months and units, and Challenge Me uses less familiar ones such as Capt. , Blvd. and Apt. Ask your child to say each abbreviation as the whole word and to check that the capital letter and the period are in the right places.
Common Core standard: L.3.2
Monday is written Mon. and Doctor is written Dr.
