About this worksheet

Every complete sentence has two parts. The subject tells who or what the sentence is about, and the predicate tells what the subject does or is. In The little dog barked loudly, the subject is the little dog and the predicate is barked loudly. On this worksheet your child reads twelve sentences, and in each one a part is shown in quotation marks; your child writes subject or predicate on the line.

Half of the parts are subjects and half are predicates. Building Confidence uses short subjects and predicates, On Level uses longer ones, and Challenge Me uses long subjects such as my cousin from Texas and subjects joined by and. Ask your child to find who or what the sentence is about first.

What your child will learn

  • Say what the subject of a sentence tells
  • Say what the predicate of a sentence tells
  • Find where a sentence splits into two parts

Common Core standard: L.3.1

Worked example

In 'Grandma baked a pie', Grandma is the subject because the sentence is about her, and baked a pie is the predicate because it tells what she did.

Common mistake

Choosing only the first word as the subject, when the subject can be several words such as the little dog.

Helpful hint

Ask who or what the sentence is about. That part, with its describing words, is the subject.
