About this worksheet

Every sentence has a subject, who or what the sentence is about, and a predicate, what the subject does or is. Each sheet has six sentences, and your child writes the subject and the predicate on two lines under each one. Building Confidence uses short subjects, and the harder levels add longer subjects and subjects with two names.

What your child will learn

  • Find the subject of a sentence
  • Find the predicate of a sentence
  • Know a subject with two names is still one subject

Common Core standard: L.4.1

Worked example

The brown dog ran across the yard. The subject is The brown dog. The predicate is ran across the yard.

Common mistake

Writing only one word of the subject, such as dog, and leaving out the words that describe it.
