About this worksheet

Adjectives and adverbs change form when we compare: 'fast' becomes 'faster' when two things are compared and 'fastest' when three or more are, and longer words use 'more' and 'most'. A few change completely, such as good, better, best. On this fifth grade sheet each of twelve sentences has a blank and a word in brackets, and the child writes the form that fits.

Versions 1 to 3 ask for the comparative and versions 4 to 6 for the superlative. Each version has different sentences, and the answer key gives every form.

What your child will learn

  • Use -er and -est
  • Use more and most with longer words
  • Know good, bad and far
  • Choose comparative for two and superlative for many

Common Core standard: L.4.1.D

Worked example

The cheetah is faster than the turtle (two things). The cheetah is the fastest of all the animals (many).

Common mistake

Writing 'more faster' or 'gooder', adding both more and -er or -er to an irregular word.

Helpful hint

Two things: -er or more. Three or more: -est or most. Remember good, better, best.
