About this worksheet

A conjunction joins parts of a sentence. A coordinating conjunction such as 'and' or 'so' joins two equal parts, and a subordinating conjunction such as 'because', 'when' or 'after' makes one part depend on the other. On this fifth grade sheet each of twelve sentences has exactly one conjunction, and the child circles whether it is coordinating or subordinating.

Each version has different sentences, and the answer key names the type for every one.

What your child will learn

  • Find the conjunction
  • Know and, so, because, when and after
  • Tell coordinating from subordinating
  • See which part depends on the other

Common Core standard: L.5.1.A

Worked example

In 'Because the bell rang, the class lined up' the word because is a subordinating conjunction, since the first part cannot stand alone.

Common mistake

Calling every joining word coordinating, because they all join two parts.

Helpful hint

If either part could stand alone as a sentence, the conjunction is coordinating. If one part cannot, it is subordinating.
