About this worksheet

Kindergarten noun work begins with a simple oral idea: some words name the people, animals, places, and things around us. Children often recognize a familiar object but do not yet separate its name from a word that tells what it does. In a sentence such as The rabbit hops, rabbit is the naming word and hops is the action. This worksheet keeps the sentences brief and asks children to listen for one clear noun at a time. The questions rotate between finding a person, an animal, a place, and an object so noun does not come to mean only thing. Read each sentence aloud if decoding slows the child down. Notice whether your child points to the word that can be named rather than the most exciting word in the sentence. Saying ‘I can see a ___’ can help test many concrete nouns without introducing a formal grammar rule too early.

What your child will learn

  • Find a naming word in a short sentence
  • Recognize nouns for people, animals, places, and things
  • Tell a naming word from an action word
  • Use a concrete noun to name something nearby

Worked example

In ‘The dog runs,’ dog names an animal. Runs tells the action, so dog is the noun.

Common mistake

Choosing the action because it feels more noticeable than the naming word.

Helpful hint

Ask which word names someone, someplace, or something.
