Understanding a question begins with its first word. Who asks about a person, what asks about a thing or action, where asks about a place, and when asks about a time. Kindergarten children may know all four words in conversation but still answer with the wrong kind of information. A child might respond to ‘Where did you play?’ with ‘after lunch,’ giving a time instead of a place. This worksheet separates the four jobs through short questions rooted in ordinary routines. Some items ask which question word belongs in a blank; others ask which kind of answer would make sense. Read the completed question aloud and emphasize the opening word, but do not explain it before the child chooses. If an answer is difficult, offer a person, a place, and a time and ask which one fits. That comparison helps children build a durable meaning for each word rather than memorizing a chant.
‘Where is your coat?’ needs a place answer, such as on the hook, so where is the right question word.
