Grade 1 Math Worksheet

Count the coins. Write the total in cents.

A nickel is worth 5 cents and a penny is worth 1 cent, so counting nickels and pennies means counting by fives and then by ones. On this grade 1 worksheet each line shows a row of nickels and pennies, biggest coin first, and your child writes the total in cents on the line.
Support sheets use up to 3 of each coin, standard sheets up to 5 and challenge sheets up to 7. Say the count out loud as you touch each coin: 5, 10, 15, then 16, 17. Skip counting by fives first makes the pennies easy.
Common Core standard: 2.MD.C.8
There are 3 nickels and 2 pennies. Count the nickels by fives: 5, 10, 15. Then count on the pennies: 16, 17. Write 17.
