About this worksheet

Expanded form writes a number as the sum of its tens and its ones: 47 is 40 + 7. It shows what each digit is worth, which is why a 4 in the tens place means 40, not 4. On this grade 1 worksheet each line shows a two-digit number and its expanded form with one part missing, such as 47 = 40 + ____ or 47 = ____ + 7, and your child writes the missing part.

Support sheets use numbers from 21 to 59, standard sheets go up to 99, and challenge sheets put the missing part first more often. Say the number as tens and ones out loud first, then write the part that is missing.

What your child will learn

  • Write a two-digit number as tens plus ones
  • Know a digit's worth depends on its place
  • Find the missing tens part or ones part
  • Connect 4 tens and 7 ones to 40 + 7

Common Core standard: 1.NBT.B.2

Worked example

47 = 40 + ____. The 4 is in the tens place, so it is worth 40. The 7 is 7 ones. Write 7.
