Expanded form writes a number as the sum of its tens and its ones: 47 is 40 + 7. It shows what each digit is worth, which is why a 4 in the tens place means 40, not 4. On this grade 1 worksheet each line shows a two-digit number and its expanded form with one part missing, such as 47 = 40 + ____ or 47 = ____ + 7, and your child writes the missing part.
Support sheets use numbers from 21 to 59, standard sheets go up to 99, and challenge sheets put the missing part first more often. Say the number as tens and ones out loud first, then write the part that is missing.
