About this worksheet

Choosing the right unit means knowing how long each unit really is. An inch is about the width of a thumb tip, a foot is about the length of a shoe, a yard is one big stride, a centimeter is about the width of a fingernail, and a meter is about one big step. Second graders use those pictures to decide whether a pencil is 7 inches or 7 feet long, and whether a football field is 100 meters or 100 centimeters.

Each line on this page gives an object and a number, with the units to choose from named at the top of the page, and your child writes the unit that makes sense. Odd-numbered worksheets use inches, feet and yards, and even-numbered worksheets use centimeters and meters, so a child works in one system at a time. A real ruler and a meter stick on the table make the sizes easy to feel.
