About this worksheet

Making change means working out how much money is left after paying more than something costs. A child who pays 50 cents for a 35 cent pencil gets 15 cents back, and there are two good ways to find it: subtract 50 minus 35, or count up from 35 to 50 the way a shopkeeper does, 40, 45, 50. This worksheet has eight short shopping stories, each with the price, the money paid and a line for the change in cents.

Suggest counting up from the price, using nickels and dimes, and then checking by adding the change to the price, which should give the amount paid. Real coins on the table make this much easier to see, and a toy shop game at home makes it fun.

What your child will learn

  • Find the change by subtracting or counting up
  • Check change by adding it to the price
  • Work with prices under one dollar
