The same digit can mean very different amounts depending on where it sits. In 265 the 6 is worth sixty, in 628 it is worth six hundred, and in 346 it is only worth six. Second graders often read a three-digit number correctly and still say that the digit six always means six, so this skill needs plain practice. Each number on this page has one digit underlined, and your child writes what that digit is worth.
Ask which place the digit is in, the ones, the tens or the hundreds, and what each place is worth. A place value chart can help at first. Check the answer by saying the number in parts: two hundred, sixty, five. Do a few together out loud before your child writes.
Common Core standard: 2.NBT.A.1
In 265 the underlined 6 is in the tens place, so it is worth 6 tens, or 60.
