Expanded form takes a number apart by place value. Instead of 253, it says 200 + 50 + 3, which shows that the number is made of two hundreds, five tens and three ones. Writing numbers this way helps children see why regrouping works and prepares them for adding and subtracting three-digit numbers. Each line on this page has a number, and your child writes the sum of its parts on the line, starting with the hundreds.
Numbers with a zero, like 430, have no ones, so the expanded form leaves that part out: 400 + 30. Ask your child to say each digit with its place name first, and to add the parts back together to check that they make the original number.
Common Core standard: 2.NBT.A.3
253 = 200 + 50 + 3. The 2 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 200.
Writing the digits with plus signs, such as 2 + 5 + 3, instead of their values.
Say each digit with its place: 2 hundreds is 200.
