Grade 2 Math Worksheet

Subtract. Then write the number that checks it.

Addition and subtraction undo each other, and that gives children a way to prove a subtraction right. If 74 - 38 = 36, then putting the 36 and the 38 back together must give 74, so 36 + 38 = 74. If the sum does not come back to the starting number, the subtraction has a mistake. Each problem on this worksheet comes as a pair: a stacked subtraction, and next to it the addition that checks it with a number missing.
It works as a short lesson on fact families too, because the same three numbers make both sentences. Ask your child to say it aloud: the part left plus the part taken away makes the whole. Checking is a habit worth building early, because it lets a child find a mistake without waiting for a grown-up to mark the page.
