About this worksheet

Multiplication follows rules that make hard facts easier. The order of the two numbers does not change the product, so 6 times 4 is the same as 4 times 6. A product can also be broken apart: 7 times 8 is the same as 7 times 5 plus 7 times 3, which is 35 plus 21. On this worksheet your child fills in one missing number in an equation that shows one of these rules.

Building Confidence uses the order rule, and On Level and Challenge Me use the break-apart rule with larger facts. These ideas are how third graders learn the facts they have not yet memorized, by using a fact they already know. Ask your child to say the rule in their own words before writing the number.

What your child will learn

  • Know that the order of the factors does not change the product
  • Break one factor apart to use facts already known
  • Fill in a missing number in an equation

Common Core standard: 3.OA.B.5

Worked example

7 × 8 = 7 × 5 + 7 × 3, because 8 is 5 and 3 together: 35 + 21 = 56.

Common mistake

Breaking the number apart but forgetting to multiply the second part by the other factor too.

Helpful hint

Use the rule: swap the numbers, or break one number apart and add the two products.
