About this worksheet

In a division story the remainder can mean different things: some left over, one more van, or just the whole groups. Each sheet has six separate problems, and your child writes one number for each. The problems ask for the number of full groups, the number left over, the number of vans or boxes needed, the size of equal groups and the number of whole pieces.

What your child will learn

  • Solve a division story
  • Decide what the remainder means
  • Round up when the extras still need a group

Common Core standard: 4.OA.A.3

Worked example

47 students in vans of 6: 47 ÷ 6 = 7 R 5, so 8 vans are needed to take everyone.

Common mistake

Always writing the quotient, even when the question asks for the number left over or the number of vans needed.

Helpful hint

Divide first. Then read the question again: whole groups, left over, or one more group?
