Capacity tells how much a container holds. Each sheet has twenty conversions, such as 5 gal = ____ qt, and your child writes the new number on the line with the unit already printed. About one problem in five uses liters and milliliters; the rest use gallons, quarts, pints and cups.
What your child will learn
Convert gallons, quarts, pints and cups
Convert liters and milliliters
Multiply to go to a smaller unit and divide to go to a larger one
Common Core standard: 4.MD.A.1
Worked example
3 gal = 12 qt, because 1 gal = 4 qt and 3 × 4 = 12. And 8 pt = 4 qt, because 2 pt = 1 qt.
Common mistake
Dividing when the answer should be in a smaller unit, so 3 gal becomes less than 3 qt.
Helpful hint
A smaller unit means more of them: multiply. A larger unit means fewer of them: divide.
