About this worksheet

The order of operations says what to do first when an expression has several operations: brackets first, then multiplying and dividing, then adding and subtracting. Each sheet has ten expressions with five numbers and one pair of brackets, and your child writes the value on the line. Building Confidence uses adding and subtracting, On Level adds multiplying, and Challenge Me adds dividing.

What your child will learn

  • Do the brackets first
  • Multiply and divide before adding and subtracting
  • Work left to right inside each step

Common Core standard: 5.OA.A.1

Worked example

(12 + 8) × 3 − 5 + 4 = 20 × 3 − 5 + 4 = 60 − 5 + 4 = 59.

Common mistake

Working straight from left to right and ignoring the brackets or the multiplication.

Helpful hint

Circle the brackets and do them first, then circle each × or ÷.
