To round a number to the nearest hundred, look at the tens digit: 50 or more rounds the hundreds digit up, and 49 or less leaves it as it is, and everything to the right becomes zeros. Rounding is how people estimate, from the price of a car to the crowd at a game. This fifth grade sheet has eighteen large numbers, five and six digits, and the child writes each one rounded to the nearest hundred.
Every version has different numbers, some that round up, some that round down and some that sit just on the line, and the answer key gives each rounded number.
What your child will learn
Find the hundreds place
Look at the tens digit to decide
Round up at 50 or more
Write the zeros that follow
Common Core standard: 4.NBT.A.3
Worked example
954,689 rounds to 954,700, because the tens digit 8 is 5 or more, so the hundreds digit 6 goes up to 7.
Common mistake
Looking at the ones digit instead of the tens digit, or forgetting to change the digits to the right into zeros.
Helpful hint
Underline the hundreds digit. Look at the digit to its right: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less stays.
