About this worksheet

Real problems rarely take one step. A child reads a short story, finds a total or a share, and then uses it for a second step to reach the answer. This fifth grade sheet has six separate two-step stories that use multiplication, division, addition and subtraction with whole numbers, each answered on its own line.

Because the stories differ, a child has to decide the operations each time instead of repeating one pattern. Each version has different stories and numbers, and the answer key gives all six answers.

What your child will learn

  • Read a story for the numbers
  • Choose the operation for each step
  • Use the first answer in the second step
  • Check that an answer makes sense

Common Core standard: 5.NBT.B.5

Worked example

A baker makes 6 trays of 24 muffins: 6 × 24 = 144. She sells 87, so 144 − 87 = 57 are left.

Common mistake

Stopping after the first step, or using a number from the story when the first answer was needed.

Helpful hint

Underline the numbers. Find the first thing the story lets you work out, then use it in the second step.
