About this worksheet

Full and empty are two of the first measurement words a child learns, and they come before cups, liters and rulers. A full container has as much in it as it can hold, and an empty one has nothing in it. On this page every item shows a glass, a basket or a jar, some full and some empty, and the child circles the picture that answers the one word printed at the top. Odd versions ask for the full one and even versions ask for the empty one, so the sheet never changes its question halfway down.

The support and standard sheets show two pictures, and the challenge sheet shows three. The pictures are different containers on purpose: the question is about what is inside, not about the shape of the container. Pour water into a glass at home and ask which word fits it now, full or empty.

What your child will learn

  • Tell a full container from an empty one
  • Look inside a container, not at its shape
  • Use the words full and empty
  • Circle the picture that answers the question

Common Core standard: K.MD.A.2

Worked example

The word at the top says full. One picture is a glass with water up to the top, and the other is an empty basket. The glass is full, so circle it.

Common mistake

Choosing the bigger container, or the one on the left, instead of looking at what is inside.

Helpful hint

Look inside each one. Is there as much in it as it can hold?
