About this worksheet

A balance scale shows weight without a single number. The side that goes down holds the heavier thing, and the side that goes up holds the lighter thing. On this page each question shows a balance scale with a rock in one pan and a feather in the other, tipped to one side or the other, and asks which one is heavier or which one is lighter. The child looks at which pan is lower and circles the rock or the feather.

The scale does the measuring, so the child only has to read it: down means heavier, up means lighter. A rock is a good partner for a feather because the difference is plain, and a child who has held both already knows the answer. Try it at home with a kitchen scale or a homemade seesaw of a ruler and a pencil, and watch which side goes down.

What your child will learn

  • Read a balance scale: the side that goes down is heavier
  • Tell heavier from lighter
  • Use a picture of a scale as evidence
  • Compare two things by weight

Common Core standard: K.MD.A.2

Worked example

The scale tips so the pan with the rock goes down. The side that goes down is heavier, so the rock is heavier.
