About this worksheet

Position words let a child describe where something is without pointing at it, and they are harder than they sound because they depend on what you are comparing with. The park can be under the school while the school is over the park, and both sentences describe one picture. These little maps put one place in the middle and the others around it, each drawn as a picture rather than written as a word, so a child who cannot read can still answer. Ready sheets ask only about over and under, which children hear most often. Practice sheets add beside, which means level with, on either side. Stretch sheets turn the sentence around: instead of asking what is under the school, they name a place and ask what it sits over, so the child has to reverse the relationship rather than repeat it. Touch the place named first, then move. Most reversals disappear when the finger moves in the order the sentence does.

What your child will learn

  • Say where one place is using over, under, or beside
  • Find the place a question is asking about first
  • Understand that beside means level with, on either side
  • Reverse a position sentence and keep it true

Worked example

Put a finger on the school in the middle. Move straight down. The place your finger lands on is the one that is under the school.

Common mistake

Answering about the wrong place because the first place named in the sentence was never found.
