About this worksheet

Most stories have a problem, something that goes wrong or that a character needs, and a solution, how the problem is fixed. Finding them is one of the first ways first graders learn how a story is built. On this grade 1 worksheet each question is a tiny story of three sentences. The odd-numbered versions ask your child to circle the sentence that tells the problem, and the even-numbered versions ask for the sentence that tells the solution, so each sheet has one question from top to bottom.

The three sentences are the choices: the setting, the problem and the solution. Ask your child what the character wanted, what got in the way and what the character did.

What your child will learn

  • Tell the problem in a short story
  • Tell the solution in a short story
  • Separate the setting, the problem and the solution
  • Read three-sentence stories
