About this worksheet

Some things in a book could happen in real life, and some are make-believe. Telling them apart is a first step in reading both stories and information texts, because it asks the child to compare what they read with what they know about the world. On this grade 1 worksheet each line is one sentence, and your child circles the word real if it could happen or make-believe if it could not.

Half of the sentences are real and half are make-believe, in a mixed order. The make-believe sentences are silly, so it is a good time to laugh together. Ask your child how they know: 'Cows give milk, so that is real.

What your child will learn

  • Tell what could happen from what could not
  • Use what you know about the world
  • Read short sentences with a reason
  • Explain a choice in a few words

Common Core standard: RL.1.9

Worked example

A cow gives milk. That happens in real life, so circle real. A cat drives a bus. Cats cannot drive, so circle make-believe.
