Grade 1 Reading Worksheet

Say the picture's name slowly. Write how many sounds you hear.

Counting the separate sounds in a word, called segmenting, is one of the best predictors of how easily a child will learn to read and spell. A word such as cat has three sounds, /k/ /a/ /t/, and the word frog has four, /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/. Some letters work together to make one sound, so ship has three sounds and four letters.
On this grade 1 worksheet each box shows a picture, and your child says its name slowly, touches a finger for each sound and writes how many sounds there are. Support sheets use words with two or three sounds, and standard and challenge sheets add words with four sounds, such as frog and drum.
