Grade 1 Reading Worksheet

Circle the picture that rhymes with the first one.

Words that rhyme end with the same sound, so hearing a rhyme means listening to the end of a word instead of the start. That skill comes before reading and leads straight into word families such as -at and -an. On this grade 1 worksheet your child reads a short word and circles the picture whose name rhymes with it. Two of the three pictures often start with the same letter as the word, so the child has to listen to the ending.
Support sheets use plain short rhymes, standard sheets add more endings, and challenge sheets include rhymes that are spelled differently, like tree and key. Say each picture name out loud together before circling.

The word is cat. The pictures are a hat, a car and a cow. Cat and hat both end in -at, so you circle the hat.
Circling the picture that starts with the same sound (cat and car) instead of the one that ends with the same sound.
Say the word and each picture name. Listen to the end. Circle the one that ends the same way.
