About this worksheet

Counting the separate sounds in a word, called segmenting, is one of the best predictors of how easily a child will learn to read and spell. A word such as cat has three sounds, /k/ /a/ /t/, and the word frog has four, /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/. Some letters work together to make one sound, so ship has three sounds and four letters.

On this grade 1 worksheet each box shows a picture, and your child says its name slowly, touches a finger for each sound and writes how many sounds there are. Support sheets use words with two or three sounds, and standard and challenge sheets add words with four sounds, such as frog and drum.

What your child will learn

  • Say a word slowly, one sound at a time
  • Count the sounds in a word
  • Know that letters and sounds are not always the same number
  • Get ready to spell by listening for each sound

Common Core standard: RF.1.2.D
