About this worksheet

Directions tell how to do something one step at a time, and doing the steps in the wrong order spoils the result: bread cannot be cut in half before the slices are put together. On this worksheet each task has four steps printed in mixed order, and your child writes 1, 2, 3, 4 in the circles to put them in order. Building Confidence uses steps that start with First, Next, Then and Last; On Level and Challenge Me take the cue words away, so the child has to think about what must happen before what.

Each sheet has three tasks, and each version has its own. Ask your child to read the steps aloud, find the step that must come first, and then ask what comes next.

What your child will learn

  • Find the step that has to come first
  • Put four steps in the order they must happen
  • Use cue words such as first, next, then and last

Common Core standard: RI.3.3

Worked example

To make a sandwich, you get the bread first, spread the peanut butter second, put the slices together third, and cut it last.

Common mistake

Numbering the steps in the order they are printed instead of the order they must happen.
