About this worksheet

A character trait is a word that tells what a person in a story is like, such as brave, patient or generous. Readers do not usually get the trait handed to them; they work it out from what a character does, says and feels. On this worksheet your child reads a short story once and then looks at four lines taken from it, circling the trait that each line shows.

Building Confidence offers clearly different traits, On Level adds one close choice, and Challenge Me uses only close traits, so your child has to think about which word fits best. Each of the six versions has its own story. Ask your child why a line shows the trait they picked: the proof is always in the words of the story.

What your child will learn

  • Name a trait that fits what a character does or says
  • Use words from the story as proof of a trait
  • Tell two close traits apart

Common Core standard: RL.3.3
