About this worksheet

A fact is a statement that can be checked: you can measure it, look it up, or see it happen. An opinion tells what a person thinks or feels, so two people can disagree about it. In fifth grade readers learn to tell them apart, because an author who wants to persuade often mixes the two in one paragraph. On this sheet a child reads ten short statements about animals, places, science and everyday life and circles fact or opinion for each one.

Words such as best, boring, should and prettier are clues, but they are not the whole story: some facts use words like largest or first, so the child has to ask whether the statement could be checked. Every version has ten different statements and an answer key for the grown-up.

What your child will learn

  • Tell a fact from an opinion
  • Spot words that show feelings
  • Ask whether a statement can be checked
  • Read carefully before deciding

Common Core standard: RI.5.8

Worked example

"Frogs lay their eggs in water" is a fact because you can check it. "Frogs are the cutest animals" is an opinion because people feel differently.

Common mistake

Calling a statement an opinion because it sounds important or uses a word like largest, when it can be checked.

Helpful hint

Ask: could I check this in a book or by measuring? If yes, it is a fact. If it tells a feeling, it is an opinion.
