About this worksheet
Text features help readers locate, compare, and interpret information that may not be fully explained in the main paragraph asks fifth graders to read closely, connect ideas across sentences, and choose evidence rather than a familiar-sounding answer. Students may skip a chart, caption, map, or graph even when it carries the evidence needed to answer the question. This worksheet uses compact passages and source pairs so students must return to the words on the page before answering. Students identify useful features, explain what a feature adds, connect features to questions, and choose evidence from charts, maps, logs, or diagrams. Support versions use more direct wording. Standard and challenge versions add closer choices, longer evidence, or a second source to compare. Ask your child to point to the line, feature, or reason that proves the answer. If a choice sounds reasonable but cannot be proved from the text, it is not the best reading answer.
What your child will learn
Identify text features
Use maps and charts
Explain feature purpose
Connect features to evidence
Worked example
A line graph is useful for showing how temperature changes over time because it displays a pattern.
Common mistake
Reading only the paragraph and ignoring the feature named in the question.
Helpful hint
Ask what the feature shows that the paragraph alone may not show.
