About this worksheet

Authors organize information in patterns called text structures, and knowing the pattern helps a reader follow the ideas. A sequence tells things in order, with signal words like first, next, then and finally. A problem and solution paragraph names something that went wrong and how it was fixed. A cause and effect paragraph explains why something happened, with words like because, so and as a result.

A compare and contrast paragraph tells how things are alike and different, with words like both, but and however. On this fifth grade sheet a child reads eight short paragraphs and circles the structure each one uses. Each structure appears twice, and every version has different paragraphs.

What your child will learn

  • Know the four text structures
  • Use signal words as clues
  • Tell a cause from a problem that is fixed
  • Tell an order from a comparison
