The two guide words at the top of a dictionary page show the first and the last word on that page, so a reader can tell at a glance whether a word will be there. A word is on the page when it comes after the first guide word and before the last one in alphabetical order.

On this fifth grade sheet a child reads eight pairs of guide words and circles the one of three words that would be found on that page. Each version has different words, and the answer key gives every word.
