Two words rhyme when their endings sound the same, whatever happens at the front. Hearing that block and sock belong together is one of the strongest early signs that a child is ready for reading, because it means the child can attend to a part of a word rather than the whole of it. Everything here is answered by pointing at a picture, so nothing depends on reading. The first level offers three pictures, none of them a near miss. The second adds a word that starts with the same sound as the picture but does not rhyme with it, which is the mistake almost every preschooler makes at least once: sock is offered against sun. The third level changes the question. Instead of a whole rhyme, the child listens for just the last sound, so boot goes with cat because both stop on /t/, even though they do not rhyme at all. Say every choice out loud and let the child listen rather than look.
