About this worksheet
Children often decide that anything that moves is alive, which makes a rolling ball or a moving toy especially confusing. Scientists use evidence instead: living things grow, need resources, and make more of their own kind. A thing does not need to show every trait at the moment we observe it. A seed may look still, yet it can grow under the right conditions. This worksheet asks first graders to classify familiar examples and, more importantly, choose the observation that supports each decision. Support questions use obvious plants, animals, and classroom objects. Challenge questions include seeds, fallen leaves, and machines that move. Listen for explanations based only on motion, shape, or where something is found. Ask your child to finish the sentence, “I know because…” so the category is tied to evidence rather than a guess.
