About this worksheet
Materials can be described by properties that we observe or test: hard or soft, rough or smooth, stiff or flexible, absorbent or waterproof, transparent or opaque. First graders often name the object instead of the material, or choose a favorite material without connecting it to a purpose. This worksheet keeps those ideas separate. Students identify the property shown by a short test, compare results, sort materials, and select a useful property for a simple design need. Support versions feature large contrasts such as soft cloth and hard metal. Challenge versions use properties that require evidence, such as absorbency or flexibility, and ask for a fair comparison. Exact graphs appear only when they display actual recorded test results. The page does not claim that every object made from a material behaves identically. Encourage your child to use comparison language: more flexible than, less absorbent than, or smoother than.
