About this worksheet

A push or a pull is called a force, and a force can change how something moves. A force can make a thing that is still start moving, as when a kick sends a ball rolling. It can make a moving thing stop, as when a goalie catches a ball. It can make a moving thing go faster or slower, as when a bike rider pedals harder or squeezes the brakes. And it can make a moving thing change direction, as when a bat sends a ball back.

A bigger push or pull makes a bigger change. This worksheet gives eight things that happen, and the child circles how the force changes the motion: starts moving, stops moving, speeds up, slows down or changes direction. Ask your child to picture the thing before the push or pull and after it, and to say what was different.

What your child will learn

  • Tell that a push or a pull is a force
  • Name five ways a force can change motion
  • Say what a thing was doing before and after the force

NGSS standard: K-PS2-1

Worked example

A girl kicks a ball that is sitting on the grass. The ball was still and now it moves, so the kick made it start moving.

Common mistake

Choosing speeds up when a still thing starts to move, or slows down when a moving thing stops.
