About this worksheet

Every state has symbols that stand for it, such as a state bird, a flower, a tree and a nickname. A symbol helps people remember what makes a state special. Arizona is the Grand Canyon State; its state bird is the cactus wren, its flower is the blossom of the saguaro cactus and its tree is the palo verde, and its capital is Phoenix. West Virginia is the Mountain State; its state bird is the cardinal, its flower is the rhododendron, its tree is the sugar maple and its capital is Charleston.

Students learn their own state's symbols first and then those of other states. This worksheet gives six questions about one state, Arizona on some sheets and West Virginia on others. Ask your child to tell you a symbol of the state where you live and why it fits.

What your child will learn

  • Name symbols of the state
  • Tell the state's nickname and capital
