About this worksheet

People get the things they want in more than one way. They can trade, which means two people give each other things they have and no money changes hands. They can also buy, which means they pay money for a good, such as a loaf of bread, or a service, such as a haircut. This worksheet gives six short sentences about different people, and your child writes trading or buying on the line for each one.

Ask one question every time: did anyone pay money? If nobody did, it is a trade. Talk about times your family has swapped something, and times you have used money to get what you needed. Some trades are between friends and some are between businesses, but the question is always the same: is money part of it? A tip at the top of the page gives both words in one line.

What your child will learn

  • Tell trading from buying
  • Use money as the clue
  • Give an everyday example of each

C3 Framework standard: D2.Eco.3.K-2

Worked example

Mia gives Jo her apple and gets his orange. Nobody pays money, so it is trading. Dad pays three dollars for a loaf of bread, so it is buying.
