About this worksheet

A symbol is a picture or a place that stands for something bigger. The United States has symbols that children see at school, on coins and on the news. The flag has stars and stripes. The bald eagle is a large bird with a white head. The Liberty Bell is a big bell with a crack. The Statue of Liberty stands in a harbor in New York and holds up a torch.

The White House is the home of the president. On this page each question names one symbol and shows three pictures, and the child circles the one that is named. Say the name out loud and ask what the child knows about it. Look for these symbols at school and on a walk: the flag outside the post office, the eagle on a coin, and the bell on a stamp.

What your child will learn

  • Name five symbols of the United States
  • Match a symbol's name to its picture
  • Know that a symbol stands for something bigger
