About this worksheet

Many short words end with consonant spellings that follow recurring patterns rather than a simple one-sound, one-letter match. After a short vowel, English often doubles F, L, S, or Z, and other words use endings such as CK, NG, NK, or TCH. A first grader may hear the final sound correctly but choose only one of the conventional letters. This worksheet keeps attention at the right edge of the word. Children restore an ending, compare plausible spellings, and produce complete words from clues. Support practice shows the beginning of each target and offers fewer ending choices. Standard and challenge pages gradually remove those supports while retaining the same final-pattern skill. Watch whether your child stops writing as soon as the word can be sounded out. Reading the last two or three boxes separately helps reveal whether the conventional ending is complete, even when every letter is not individually heard.

What your child will learn

  • Spell doubled final consonants
  • Use CK, NG, NK, and TCH endings
  • Attend to the right edge of a word
  • Distinguish sound from conventional spelling

Worked example

Bell ends after a short vowel with two L letters, even though the ending is one /l/ sound.

Common mistake

Writing one final consonant because the doubled letter is not heard twice.

Helpful hint

After spelling the sounds, inspect the last boxes for the complete pattern.
