The endings -ed and -ing change a verb to show when something happens: jumped tells what already happened, and jumping tells what is happening now. For most words the ending is simply added: jump becomes jumped and jumping. Two groups follow special rules that second graders learn this year. A word that ends in a silent e drops the e before the ending, so bake becomes baked and baking.
A short word with one vowel and one last consonant doubles that consonant, so hop becomes hopped and hopping. This worksheet gives ten base words with an ending, and the child writes the new word on the line. The support sheet uses plain words, and the standard and challenge sheets mix in the e and doubling groups. Ask your child to say the new word and listen for the extra sound.
Common Core standard: L.2.2.D
bake + ing: drop the e, then add ing, to make baking. hop + ed: double the p, then add ed, to make hopped.
Adding the ending without the change (bakeing, hoping for hopping).
Look at the end of the base word. Silent e? Drop it. One vowel and one consonant? Double it.
