About this worksheet

A child who can sing the alphabet still has to discover that each letter stands for a sound inside words she already says every day. This page makes that link for the first five letters, and it makes it without asking her to read anything. She sees one letter card and three or four pictures, and she answers by pointing. The grown-up says the letter, says its sound, and names each picture aloud, so the whole activity happens in speech. The gentlest version asks which picture starts with the letter on the card. The next asks which of three pictures does not, which cannot be answered by matching one sound and stopping there. The hardest version puts two letters on the card and asks for the first of them, so a genuine near miss has to be turned down on purpose. Watch whether your child stretches the beginning of each name before she points, and if she does not, stretch it once for her and then wait.

  • Link the letters A, B, C, D, and E to the sounds they stand for
  • Choose a picture by its beginning sound rather than by its letter name
  • Reject a picture that begins with a different sound
  • Hold two letter sounds in mind and pick between them

Worked example

The card shows B. Name the pictures together: ball, bear, sun. Ball and bear both begin /b/, and sun does not, so sun is the odd one.

Common mistake

Answering with the letter's name instead of its sound. A child who says "bee" for B is looking for a word that starts like the name, not like /b/.
