About this worksheet

F through J hold the pair of sounds preschoolers mix up most often. G and J have letter names that rhyme, so a child who is thinking about names rather than sounds will reach for the wrong one, and the only reliable cure is to hear /g/ and /j/ side by side many times. This page puts them side by side on purpose. Your child looks at one letter, or on the hardest version at two, and points to the picture whose spoken name matches. Because the choices are drawings rather than words, nothing on the page has to be decoded, and a three-year-old can finish the sheet with no help beyond an adult naming the pictures once. Say consonants cleanly when you model them: /f/ rather than "fuh". The extra vowel is what later turns a two-sound blend into three, and it is much easier to leave out now than to remove later.

Worked example

The card shows G and J. Name the pictures: goat, jet, hat, nest. Goat begins /g/, which is the first letter on the card, so goat is the answer.
