About this worksheet

Q is the letter this group has to get right. Q almost never works alone in English: it travels with U, and the pair says /kw/, which is two sounds run together. A worksheet that keys queen to a single Q sound is teaching something untrue, and a child who answers K is hearing the word correctly. So the questions here ask which picture starts with the LETTER Q, and the grown-up's line supplies the honest version of the sound. The rest of the group is easier ground. P and T are quick sounds that stop as soon as they start, while S and R can be held for as long as a breath lasts, and that contrast is worth pointing out: some sounds you can sing and some you cannot. Every answer is a picture, so a child answers with a finger and never has to read.

What your child will learn

  • Match P, Q, R, S, and T to pictures that begin with them
  • Learn that Q and U work together and say /kw/
  • Notice which sounds can be held and which stop at once
  • Turn down a picture that begins with a different letter

Worked example

The card shows Q. Say the pictures: quilt, pig, tree. Quilt begins /kw/, the sound Q and U make together, so quilt is the answer.

Common mistake

Marking K wrong when a child hears /k/ at the front of queen. She is hearing the word correctly; what she has not met yet is the qu- pair.

Helpful hint

Hold the sounds you can hold, and cut the quick ones off sharply.
